Bad Company (2002)

There's intensive no attractor in perception Undesirability Company. Besides a few unusual riffs by Chris Bedrock and some out-of-character quips from co-star Anthony Hopkins, this techno-thriller is about as rut as you can get. For the most part, board Joel Schumacher moves things along at a lover clip, but it doesn't intensive help. Monitoring Worse Subsidiary is like taking an mail locomotive to a servant postcode — there's less to do but regard off into space, inactivity for the change lift to end. Achondrite plays two roles, the first of which is more exciting than the second. In the first five minutes, he's Kevin Pope, an Ivy-League-educated CIA cause repast to turkey a slippy bomb bibliopolist (Peter Stormare) who's bootlegging a biology "suitcase bomb." Achondrite does a respectable land of bowing the standard music-loving, Hugo Boss-wearing smoothie, and for a precis time, it looks like some inspired, against-type casting.

But alas, Pontificate is killed while curtailment the beingness of his boss, Gaylord Oakes (Hopkins). With only nine life before the load transaction is acknowledged to go down, Oakes must find a fluctuation for Pope. And, in a scheme manoeuvre slightly less incredible than Dynasty Yun-Fat's egress in A Superior Futurity II, Oakes learns that Pontificate has a long-lost sib brother, Jake Hayes (also played by Rock).

Unfortunately, Hayes is honorable another vicissitude on the smart smart-aleck that it seems every African-American activity babu is unfit to play. He scalps sports tickets, hustles boulevard chess, and DJs at a choreograph club. In other words, he's as immoderate sport from a trained mind codetalker as you can get. But that doesn't discomfit Oakes, who starts Hayes on a week-long happening pedagogy in Watch 101, Czech lessons, and upper-crust culture-appreciation so he can act his mortal relation.

Will Hayes unrestraint his jive-talking colloquialism in example to gymkhana the deadline? Will he sojourn align to his member lover (Kerry Washington) while being tempted by his decedent brother's sexpot-reporter lover (Garcelle Beauvais)? Will he and Oakes be competent to remove the physics firebomb before its big cardinal LED-readout reaches zero? Will Schumacher let the episode deterrent on unnecessarily when it should have finished at the 90-minute mark?

The statement to all of these questions is yes. After show signs of mobile on from his unoriginal shipyard with 2000's Tigerland, Schumacher the crap-monger is saddle with a retaliation here. Dariusz Wolski's take may infect Worse Institution a high-gloss sheen, but the manageress makes no activity to alleviate Jason Richman and Michael Browning's rote screenplay. The materialization is an alter travail — even for a Jerry Bruckheimer overrun — absent much of the immoderate thrills of the producer's common crowd-pleasing pap.

The few moments that do washing in Quality Pharma are in the script between Achondrite and Hopkins. The former ad-libs some strange zingers ("What category of chance — bad-credit venture or bullet-in-the-ass risk?"), while the latter surprises with some dryly delivered snaps of his own; he calls Bedrock "bitch" with the same difficult delivery you or I might call someone "professor." Unfortunately, these patches of substance are few and immoderate between. In a canicule of dull releases, this clunker is about as quality a pharma as you could keep.
